Analyzing the Real Class Teaching Video

Last semester, I learnt Teaching Methodology subject with a very bright lecturer. One of my assignment was asked by her to analyze the real class teaching video. I analyzed a video which I took from youtube on the title ‘Demonstration Lesson with a Grade 6 Class’. Here is the link for the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNXAzk8K5xs&t=592s
Demonstration Lesson with A Grade 6 Class
Using the appropriate method in teaching learning process is very important in order the students can easily learn the materials. In this video, the teacher used various method to teach the students. She use Total Physical Respone, Communicative Language Teaching and Audio Lingual Method. She combined it when she was teaching.
Although she used some methods, but she can relate it well. When she used Audio Lingual Method, she relate it with Total Physical Respone. Also, when she used Communicative Language Teaching, she relate it with Total Physical Respone.
Total Physical Respone is a language teaching method built around the coordination of speech and action; it attemps to teach language through physical activity.
Communicative Language Teaching is an approach which emphasises that the goal of language learning is communicative competence.
Audio Lingual Method is a method which emphasized the teaching of listening and speaking before reading and writing.

1.      Role of Teacher and Students
The teacher’s role is central and active. She is as a facilitator, director and adviser. She also controll the language behaviour of her students. The students are imitators of the teacher’s model and act actively in the classroom. They follow the teacher’s directions and respond  as rapidly as possible. At the first, teacher greet students and students answer it. Teacher repeat it many times in order the students can answer it rapidly and correctly. Then, teacher give some pictures and ask students about the pictures, the students try to give their ideas one by one by raised their hand. They act actively during the teaching learning process. After that, teacher give some picture to them and ask them about it and then she ask them to practice it appropriate with the picture. For example, if the picture is about someone who are tired, so they practice the tired’s activity. Then, she patchs some pictures in the wall and she play the tape recorder and ask them to point out to the pictures which have patched by the teacher that related to what the speaker say. Next, teacher ask some students to stand in front of the class and give a word for each student and then she ask them to arrange the words become a sentence.  After that, she ask them to patch it in the whiteboard. The last, teacher give a conversation in a paper for each student and then divide them into two group, one group as the asker and the other as the answerer.

2.      The Nature of Students-Teacher Interaction
Most of the interaction is between teacher and students and initiated by the teacher. Student-to-student interaction occur when students take different roles in dialogs (when the teacher ask them to do conversation) that were divided into two groups by teacher. The teacher interacts with the whole students and with individual students. She interacts with the whole students when she used Total Physical Respone and Audio Lingual Method. In Total Physical Respone, she aks them to act appropriate with the picture, they respond non verbally. The teacher and students perform the action together. in Audio Lingual Method, teacher do conversation with all of the students and then they respond it. Sometime, she ask them to do conversation with their friends who were divided into two big groups. Whereas, when she used Communicative Language Teaching, she often aks them one by one to express their ideas and the students work in group when the teacher ask them to arrange the words that teacher gave.

3.      The Characteristic of Teaching Learning Process
The teacher combines some methods when she is teaching the class, so, the characacteristic of teaching learning process is various. Initially, the teacher do dialog with the students. The dialogs are learned through imitation, repetition and also question-and-answer. The teacher greet them “good morning class” and they answer it “good morning teacher”. The teacher also give a dialog in a paper and then she read it and students imitate her and repeat what she has said. After finish their conversation, the teacher played the tape recorder about that conversation to ensure the correct pronunciation in the corversation. At the end, she ask them some questions related to the conversation.
Teacher is an model. When she ask the students to act appropriate with the picture, she act it by herself first so that the students can imitate her. However, in the next phase, the students can understand the commands from the teacher by performing it by themselve. When the teacher show the next picture, they perform it rapidly.
During the teaching learning process, sometimes, the teacher divided the students in small group. For example, when she ask the students to arrange some words become a sentence, she choose some of their students to stand in front of the class and give a word for each of them. After their turn, she choose others students to stand in front of the class too until all of students get their turn with their group. The teacher also give them the picture strip story and aks them about the story in the picture and they try to give their ideas one by one by raised their hand.

4.      How Does The Teacher Respond to The Students Errors?
Teacher only correct the major errors. In the beginning of the class, she greet their students and the students answer it. If they answer incorrect, she correct it rapidly and repeat it for more times until the students can respond her correctly. Then, if the students give their ideas incompletely when the teacher ask them to tell about the picture strip story, she complete it so that the students can continue to tell about the next picture. Next, if the students make errors when they act not appropriate with the pictures, immediately the teacher correct it by performing the correct one so that the students realize that they make errors and they correct it. Also, when the students point out to the incorrect picture, she also respond them by ponting out to the correct one.

Summary of 'The Linguistic Genius of Babies' by Patricia Kuhl

Patricia Kuhl tells about a mother in India speaks Koro which is a newly-discovered language. She is talking to her baby. What this mother and the 800 people who speak Koro in the world understand that to preserve this language they need to speak it to the babies because babies and children are geniuses until they turn seven years old. The first critical period in development is the period where babies master which sound is used in their language. There are two things going on during the critical two month period, the first is that the babies are listening intently to us and they are taking statistics as they listen to us talk. Babies are sensitive to the statistics. For example, two mothers speaking motherese to the kids, English and Japanese. So, when babies listen, the babies are taking statistics on the language that they hear. The statistics of Japanese and English is very different. English has a lot of R and L. Whereas the group of intermediates sounds in Japanese is known as t...

Summary of 'Txtng is Killing Language' by John McWhorter

John McWhorter tells that texting spells the decline and fall of any kind of serious literacy or at least writing ability among young people in the United States and now the whole world today. Texting is not writing at all. If humanity had existed for 24 hours, writing only came along at about 11:07 p.m. That is how much of a latterly thing of writing. The first there is a speech, and then writing comes along as a kind of artifice. Speech is much looser. It’s much more telegraphic, much less reflective, it’s very different from writing. In a distant are now, it was common when one gave a speech to basically talk like writing. If we can speak like writing, then logically it follows that you might want to also sometimes write like we speak. One we have think that can receive the message then we have the conditions that allow that we can write like we speak, and that’s where texting comes in. Texting is very loose in its structure. No one think about capital letters or punctuation when o...

The Origin of Studying in English Majors

When I was in senior high school in the second semester of the third grade, I asked for advice of my teachers about choosing the majors to continue my study at university. Many of them advised me to choose English majors in this university.
