Developing Supplementary Reading Materials for Islamic Learners of MAN 03 Malang Based on Genre Based Approach
Programme for International Assessment (PISA) 2012 showed that Indonesian student’s reading ability is low the average. The problem in teaching and learning English that many schools in Indonesia do not facilitate students with an appropriate textbook. Waiters (1987:107) mention that good material can encourages learners to learn. In order to improve student interest, motivation and ability in reading comprehension there must find a way and an appropriate reading material that is suit to students need.
In MAN 03 Malang especially in MAKBI (Madrasah Aliyah Keagamaan Bertaraf International) program, it revealed that the English material used in this school is same with the book in other state school. There isn’t any specific reading material that is point to religion, they are not familiar with English islamic themes. Therefore, it is needed to develop supplementary reading materials that is suitable to students need and it is expected the supplementary reading material can guide students to learn the Islamic tenets through the English reading material. The writer will adopt the design of Genre Based Approache that is appropriate with the curriculum.
Nunan (1999:308) stated “Genre is a purposeful, socially constructed oral or written communicative event, such as narrative, a casual conversation, a poem, arecipe, or a description”.
The objectives of this research was to develop supplementary reading materials that inserting Islamic themes for eleventh year students of MAN 03 Malang especially for MAKBI program based on Genre Based Approache Academic year 2014-2015. This research was conducted by using research and development design. The writer adapts and modifies the material development procedure based on Borg (1981) that comprises seven steps: need analysis, selecting and sequencing the materials, developing the materials, expert validation, revising based on expert verification, try-out and evaluation from practical data, and final product of reading materials. This research and development used qualitative approache.
The result of need assessment discussing about the data that collected from checklist to get the data of students’ opinion of previous book, questionnaire that consist nine points, interview with the teacher , and syllabus. The researcher organize material mapping based on genre based approache as a guide to make systematic content of material. The topics content were chosen under the consideration that is related to the students’ need and interest, teachers’ suggestion and also syllabus. The materails included three chapters: narrative text, spoof text, and hortatory exposition text.
After finishing the first draft of the developed supplementary reading materials, the researcher validates the draft to the experts. The researcher chooses one of English lecturer of UNISMA as the first expert. First validator was focused on Islamic text, teaching reading strategy, activity and the appropriateness of the word/punctuation. The second expert is one of experienced English teacher in MAN 03 Malang who was focus on compatibility of the text, vocabulary, illustration to the students of Man 03 Malang. All of aspects concerning with weaknesses of the developed supplementary materials had been redesign based on the suggestions and had been validated by both of experts. Then, the materials are improved and ready to be tried out.
The researcher only conducted try out for one unit with two meetings in order to know the appropriateness of the developed materials from practical aspect. Based on the try-out process, the data were gathered by using questionnaires which were focus on twelve points that represent students’ opinion about the developed English materials.
After having try-out and collecting the data from the questionnaire, the researcher revised the lack and weaknesses of the developed materials, such as the topic of the text, mustyping, misspelling, unclear instruction, grammar focus and etc. Then, the textbook is completely arranged entitle Reading for Islamic Learners because this book was created especially for the islamic learners. The book contained of three units includes three genres with various kinds of passage.

My Daily Activity

Okay guys , for this posting I would like to share you about my daily activity. I usually wake up at 5 a.m, then, I go to bathroom to take ablution and then I do Shubh prayer. After praying, I usually try to memorize at least two verse s of the Qur’an . This is one of my way to get closer to our Creator, Allah. I do it until 6.15 a.m. After that I help my sister to clean the house. I wash the dishes, then sweep and mop the floor. Around 7 a.m I have breakfast. After breakfast I take a bath and get ready to go to campus if I have schedule at 8 a.m. My sister’s house where I stay is in Gampong Jawa, a bit far from campus so that I have to leave 30 minutes early. I go to campus by motorcycle. This semester, almost every day the college schedule ends before Dhuhur. After the class is over, I usually do the assignment with my close friends.
